Frederick Carter Oils29 to 33 34 to 38 39 to 43 44 to 48 49 to 52 Frederick Carter painted in oils throughout his career. Many earlier works demonstrate competent academic realism, but during the late 1930s and 1940s his style became more relaxed, free and expressionistic. In these later oil paintings he concentrated on pantomime and music hall scenes in which the dramatic light effects and lively movements serve to engage the viewer in a comic and frenzied theatrical experience. The following paintings, which include early portraits of family and a self portrait done shortly before his death, demonstrate little known aspects of Carter's singular personality and art. 29. Untitled. [Three female dancers on stage against
exotic backdrop]
30. The Mermaid. [Nude male frolics with captured
mermaid in sea in preternatural scene]
31. Untitled. [Madam Time dances holding an umbrella]
32. 'Feu de Artifice Joie'. [Commedia dell' arte
characters on stage]
33. 'Self-Portrait'
